I was a student of yours 21 years ago at DYC! I met my best friend, Lisa Topor, in one of your classes. She gave me your book to read 5 days ago and I finished it last night. That is quite an accomplishment for this mother of a 4 year old, 2 year old and 3 month old - and quite a testament to your superior writing. I miss you "Dr. Mendell."

I met you at the Hispanics United dinner and I have read your poems displayed on your site.  They are very beautiful.  Mr. Russi keeps asking me if I have sent you any of my poems so I thought I would try this.  I hope this is okay.

Walking in Memory of You
By Colleen Stewart

I’m walking in memory of you,
The one who would hold my hand,
The one who would help me get through,
The one who helped me understand.

You still make me smile,
Laughing and grinning from ear to ear,
They say I have your wits,
Something I wish you could hear.

I didn’t always take your advice,
But I did what I thought was right.
Obviously you were the one that was right,
So now I know you were so wise.

I could only hope I can be that way,
But as you said “ I will take it day by day”,
And talk to you when I pray,
Knowing you’re watching me each and everyday.

So now I walk to your gravesite,
Smiling with you on my mind,
I miss you so much,
But I know you’re just out of my touch.

I am walking for you MOM,
It gives me peace and keeps me calm.

Dear Olga,
I met your brother Roberto and his wife Katalina through a mutual friend last month at their condo in Panama. He told me about your book, and so when I returned home (Texas) I bought it and just couldn't put it down. Your thoughts are absolutely beautiful, inspiring, and show how you had the courage to create your own life. It is also so revealing of what has happened in Cuba. Thank you so much.

Olga Karman speaks as eloquently as she writes. Listening to her read passages from her book, "Scatter My Ashes Over Havana", I identified with many of the feelings that Olga Karman's story evokes. As a woman struggling against sexism, as a Latina who never quite fits in, as a survivor of an abusive marriage, as a mother questioning the impact of her decisions on her children, and as an adult returning to college; I feel that as a person she is a mentor and an inspiration. Her work is thought provoking and rich in imagery, enabling the reader to accompany her on an emotional journey through her life. I am very grateful for the privilege of hearing her share her story and the opportunity to speak to her about it. I do sincerely hope that she is aware of the fact that, like Professor Mackie who speaks with a voice "like an oboe, the words worn smooth over the years, as smooth as the beds on Mama Angelica's mother of pearl rosary", Dr. Karman also leaves the listener "feeling faint".

I am a Press Officer to Governor George E. Pataki. I had a chance to listen to your remarks this Saturday during the Annual Hispanic Heritage Month Dinner, hosted by Hispanics United of Buffalo. I thank you and congratulate you for your inspiring presentation. Following the program I tried to meet you, but was not able to locate you in the fairly large hall. I look forward to following your literary and community service work, vision, and legacy.

Subject: Congratulations!!!

Profesora,
Well, well, you are quite the famous author! I'm reading the newspaper, and there you are! I'm watching television, and there you are promoting your book! I didn't realize how famous my Spanish teacher would become. I can still remember when you were getting ready to mail your manuscript to your publisher, and you walked around with it in our class and had everyone say a prayer over it. I think of you often and all the good times we shared in our class. I wish you the best today and always.
Love,
Johnette (Juana)
